Apex, from zero to first deploy

The platform's own language, taught in the order you actually need it: the data model first, then classes, then the deploy that puts it live.

What you'll learn

  • Bulk-safe triggersWrite a trigger that survives a 200-record data load, and know why the naive one does not.
  • Read a limit errorTake a governor-limit exception and find the line that caused it, first time.
  • Query selectivelyFilter on something the platform can serve from an index, and prove it did.
  • Deploy with SFDXScratch org to production, with 75%+ coverage that means something.
  • Tests that fail firstWrite the assertion before the fix, so the test proves the behaviour rather than the coverage.
  • Respect sharingHonour field-level security and record access from Apex, by default rather than by review.

About this course

Salesforce is a platform before it is a product, and Apex is how you extend it. This course starts where every other one should: the data model, the security model, and what actually happens when a record is saved.

Every lesson has the same shape — a plain-English concept, one concrete example you build yourself, and a bridge to the next step.

How it is built

01

In dependency order

Nothing is used before it is taught. The data model comes before the trigger that fires on it, and the test comes before the deploy that needs it.

02

Five labs in your own org

Create the object, load 200 records, watch the trigger fall over, fix it. Watching someone build a trigger is not the same as building one.

03

Mapped to the exam

Every lesson names the Platform Developer I objective it covers, so studying here counts twice.

Before you start

A free Developer Edition org Lesson 01 creates one with you. It never expires and it costs nothing. Lesson 01
You can read a loop in any language No prior Apex. If you have written JavaScript, Python or Java, you have enough. Take the primer
Comfortable clicking around Setup Objects, fields and page layouts. Not required, but the labs assume you can find things. Admin basics

Is this the right one?

Admin basics

  • Clicks, not code
  • Flow, validation rules, reports
  • Start here if Setup is unfamiliar

Apex, from zero to first deploy

  • Code, tests and a real deploy
  • Assumes you can read a loop
  • The one you want if you are going to build

The arc

  1. Week 1
The data model, and what a save actually does

Objects, relationships, and the order of operations you will spend the rest of the course respecting.

  2. Week 2
Apex, in bulk from the first line

Classes, collections and triggers written for 200 records because that is what production sends.

  3. Week 3
    Tests that mean something

Coverage is a side effect. The point is a test that fails when the behaviour changes.

  4. Week 4
    The first deploy

SFDX, a scratch org, and the change set you will never have to make again.

You finish with

  • A working org with five things you built in it
  • A repository of the course code, yours to keep
  • A certificate, at 100% completion
  • The Platform Developer I outline, three quarters covered

Writes the labs. Believes a lesson you cannot break in your own org is a lesson you have not learned.

We teach the thing that goes wrong at 200 records, because that is the thing nobody teaches and everybody hits.

Lesson 09 alone paid for it. I had been writing triggers for a year and had never once thought about the second data load.

Dana WhitfieldSalesforce Developer

Blunt, short lessons with no filler. I finished it in two weekends and shipped the deploy on the Monday.

Ije OkaforConsultant
Do I need a paid Salesforce license?

No. Every lab runs in a free Developer Edition org, and lesson 01 walks you through creating one.

How long does it take?

6h 20m of video, and roughly the same again in the labs. Most people finish in two to four weeks at an hour a day.

Will this get me through Platform Developer I?

It covers about three quarters of the outline. The remaining quarter — Lightning components, integration — is the next course in the track.

What if it is not for me?

Thirty days, no questions asked, whatever you have watched. Mail us and it is refunded the same day.

Still deciding?

Two lessons are open with no account. Watch lesson 01, and if the pace is wrong you have lost eight minutes.
